Chen Yun: Don't obliterate achievements and don't cover up shortcomings. There are only advantages and no disadvantages.

On November 16, 1942, Chen Yun delivered a speech at the meeting of senior cadres of the Northwest Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, focusing on the issue of conscientiously carrying out self-criticism. "We should fight against all counter-revolutionaries and fight against all kinds of 'left' and right erroneous tendencies in the party. In carrying out these struggles, we should also fight against our own mistakes, which is self-criticism."

Chen Yun pointed out that the Communist Party is a party that does business, and Communist Party members are people who do business. It is impossible to do things without making mistakes. No matter who he is, even if he is clever, even if he is very capable, there is still the possibility of making mistakes. If we want to decide on policies, we must study the situation and use our brains to think about problems. If what we think in our minds is subjectivist and does not match the actual situation, we will make mistakes. Since mistakes cannot be completely avoided, and revolutionary work cannot succeed in them, mistakes and shortcomings must be corrected. How to correct it? "is to make self-criticism."

Whether a political party is serious or not depends on its attitude towards its own mistakes. Chen Yun believes that the Communist Party of China is a solemn party, and one of the signs of examining a strong Communist Party member is to see what attitude he adopts towards his own shortcomings and mistakes. If he dares to face up to his own shortcomings and mistakes, and dare to study and correct his own shortcomings and mistakes, then he is a good Communist Party member; if he adopts a careless attitude towards his own shortcomings and mistakes, he is not a good Communist Party member.

In response to the concern of some comrades that carrying out self-criticism will lose their confidence and prestige, Chen Yun pointed out, "as long as we are objective about our shortcomings and miscalculations, do not exaggerate or narrow down, and find out the faults realistically, we will not lose confidence. We do not obliterate achievements, and at the same time do not cover up shortcomings and mistakes, which is only good and not bad for the whole work. "Self-criticism overcomes the shortcomings and mistakes in the work, and if the work is done better, the prestige will be higher, and a person will be more open-minded and objective.

Chen Yun advocated the combination of self-criticism and listening to the opinions of others. "When we criticize a comrade, we are not criticizing anything else, but criticizing his mistakes. In doing so, there are only advantages and no disadvantages."
