Key Progress in Research and Development of Electron Beam Metal 3D Printing Equipment
In March 2017, the research and development of electron beam metal 3D printing equipment project of the Institute of Additive Manufacturing Technology and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as "Additive Manufacturing Institute") of our institute made key progress. The EBSM R2 prototype completed the overall printing of parts with zero failure for the first time, and tested the stability of the equipment electromechanical system, software and process.
Since the start of the project in May 2016, the team of the Additive Manufacturing Institute has worked together to overcome key technologies such as electron beam focus scanning control, active powder feeding and spreading, vacuum negative feedback control, etc., successfully completed prototype assembly in November 2015 and started the development of 3D printing process for 316L stainless steel materials. Through the unremitting efforts of the team, on March 22, the prototype completed the printing of impeller body parts for the first time with zero failure, marking a new milestone in the team's research and development progress.

At present, the team's electron beam 3D printing process has been relatively mature and stable, and is continuing to invest heavily in research and development to further optimize the printing process of 316L stainless steel, copper alloy, titanium alloy, titanium-aluminum-based intermetallic compound, high melting point metal and other different materials to achieve higher quality and higher efficiency of parts.
Electron beam metal 3D printing has the characteristics of high electron beam power, strong penetrating ability, low thermal stress in the forming process, high printing efficiency, and vacuum environmental protection. It has been used in the rapid manufacturing of complex parts in the fields of medical, aerospace, and industry. Broad application prospects have attracted wide attention in the industry. At present, only Swedish ARCAM company provides commercial equipment, and the team of additive manufacturing institute is the first team in China to carry out research on electron beam powder spreading 3D printing technology and realize independent research and development of commercial equipment. Since 2017, the team has further increased its market publicity efforts and is currently negotiating equipment cooperation projects with Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhuzhou Cemented Carbide Co., Ltd., China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation 12 and other units. The project (order) amount is expected to exceed 9 million yuan.
