"Huzi, you see how high the wisdom of the masses is! They are not only production experts, but also political poets. I really respect and love them."

These yellowed letterheads (photocopies) treasured in the showroom of Shuai Mengqi's life and deeds are part of many family letters written by revolutionary ancestor Shuai Mengqi to his adopted daughter, Shen Shaofan martyr's orphan Shu Wei (Huzi).

The paper is short and long, line by line full of affectionate handwritten script, telling the story of the "handsome mother" regarding the revolutionary family as her home, the revolutionary descendants as her children, and the people as her relatives.

1 In early October, the reporter came to Hanshou County and walked into the showroom and former residence of Shuai Mengqi to explore the story of "handsome mother.

revolutionary pioneer
In 1897, Shuai Mengqi was born in a poor peasant family in Chenjiawan, Dongxiang, Longyang County (now Potou Town, Hanshou County). As a teenager, she embraced progressive ideas and pursued the truth.

The showroom of Shuai Mengqi's life story restored the common scene on the streets of Longyang at that time: a slightly thin woman knocked gongs and drums, stood on a high stool, loudly mobilized women to put down their feet and cut their hair, and preached advanced ideas such as equality between men and women, women's liberation and freedom of marriage. This woman is handsome Meng Qi.

In 1926, Shuai Mengqi joined the Communist Party of China and more actively carried out various revolutionary activities.

In October 1932, Shuai Mengqi, who was leading a strike by mill workers in Shanghai, was arrested and imprisoned for betrayal by a traitor. In prison, after many unsuccessful attempts to persuade her, the enemy used various tortures such as sitting on a tiger stool, pressing a thick wooden bar, and pouring kerosene water into her nostrils.

Shuai Mengqi was tortured, his teeth were knocked out, his right leg was broken, his fundus was injured, and his whole body was bloody.

"Even under the unbearable torture of ordinary people, Shuai Mengqi would rather die than surrender and stick to the party's secrets." Zhou Guangcui, 84, former deputy director of the Party History Office in Hanshou County, had a deep relationship with Shuai Mengqi. In the 1980 s and 1990 s, he went to Beijing many times to visit Shuai Mengqi to collect and sort out relevant party history materials.

Zhou Guangcui introduced that in 1937, Shuai Mengqi was seriously ill due to the cruel torture of the enemy. The party organization rescued her from a purgatory-like prison by means of parole for medical treatment.

What is embarrassing is that during Shuai Mengqi's arrest and imprisonment, her only daughter Xu Duanyi unfortunately died. Her mother went crazy because of grief and anger, and her father was forced to leave her hometown. Her husband, who was far away in Moscow, learned of her "sacrifice" and set up another family.

Mother Soft Gut
"after seeing my grandmother, I went to liuyang county to find out about the situation. the early rice in liuyang has turned green, and the middle rice has been cut out. now I am preparing to plant the late rice. from now on, a good harvest is expected."

In May 1958, Shuai Mengqi, then a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Supervisory Committee, returned to his hometown to visit relatives and went to the countryside for investigation. On the way, she wrote a letter to her adopted daughter Shu Wei.

In the letter, most of them are kind and warm parents. But in a few words, the image of a loving mother is on paper.

After suffering, he has already lost his only flesh and blood, even the handsome Mengqi whose family is ruined. Where did the adopted daughter come from? Following the letter from home, we found the answer.

Time goes back to 1939. That winter, Shuai Mengqi, who was elected as a representative of the Seventh National Congress of the Communist Party of China, came to Yan'an. Before long, Ren Zuomin, who "brought his family to Yan", and many other martyrs' orphans, including Shen Shaofan's daughter Shu Wei, also arrived in Yan'an.

Seeing these martyrs' orphans, Shuai Mengqi's revolutionary feelings burst out. She spilled her maternal love on more children.

Shuai Mengqi adopted Shu Wei, who was only 10 years old, and took good care of other children. On weekends, when she has a little free time, she takes these children home and uses her monthly allowance to improve their lives and increase their nutrition.

Shu Wei has scabies on his body. Shuai Mengqi urgently got the medicine everywhere, and cleaned the sore surface and applied medicine for the child every day. Conditions are difficult, no soap, Shuai Mengqi dug gray vegetables to wash the clothes with pus and blood.

At that time, it was already a cold winter in Yan'an, and the Yanhe River was unusually cold. Shuai Mengqi's hands were cracked with cold, but his heart of love for his son was always hot.

"The handsome mother not only adopted and took care of many children of martyrs, but also took care of the children that the party's leading cadres had no time to take care of during the war." Zhou Guangcui made a long list: Peng Shilu, Peng Pai's son, Guo Zhicheng, Guo Liang's son, Huang Gonglue's daughter, Huang Suixin, Luo Yinong's son, Luo Northwest, Li Shuoxun's son, Li Peng, Ren Zuomin's sons, Ren Xiang and Ren Chu, Chen Zhifei and Chen Zhijian, Chen Geng's sons......

Selfless at the bottom of my heart

"To tell you something exciting, this time there are two female pilots flying the plane. They drive very well. This proves that the female comrades can do everything and do everything well. You must believe these two words very much."

Another family letter (photocopy) in the showroom was written in November 1959. In the letter, Shuai's mother encouraged Shu Wei to pursue, to strengthen her ideals and beliefs, and to struggle perseveringly. She also taught her to keep in mind the original aspirations of the Communists, respect and love the people, learn more from them, and be a person beneficial to the people.

Taking care of the descendants of the revolution and cultivating them into people who are beneficial to the people is the creed of the handsome mother.

According to Shu Wei's recollection, in addition to the earnest teachings in his family letters, Shuai Mengqi told them the most on weekdays: "you have no right, and you should never live on the merit books of your parents. You have only the obligation to inherit the revolutionary spirit of your parents and study hard and work hard for the party and the people. ”

One small thing impressed him. Once Shu Wei bought a refrigerator, which was inconvenient to carry. At that time, Shuai Mengqi's driver was going to pick up the guests. Shu Wei asked the driver to take the refrigerator home.

"This is a private matter. You are not doing it right." Shuai Mengqi was very angry when he learned of this and severely criticized his adopted daughter. Finally, Shu Wei made a face-to-face review and paid 5 yuan for the oil. This small matter, let Shu Wei thoroughly understand: as a party member, public and private is a principle that must be adhered.

While educating his children, Shuai Mengqi set an example himself.

Zhou Guangcui tells a story that is widely circulated in the local area. In 1981, a grandnephew of Shuai Mengqi's hometown asked the county party secretary to arrange a job in her name. Shuai Mengqi immediately wrote to tell the county that any relatives seeking special care in her name should not be ignored. Shuai Mengqi also sent a letter to the nephew, seriously criticizing his mistakes and encouraging him to be an honest young man with ambition.

Today's Shuai Mengqi's former residence is lined with plum blossoms of tenacious character and pure and noble lotus flowers. The value pursuit of the Communists, who are selfless and private before the public, is also constantly guiding and encouraging future generations.
