Why does Zhou Enlai care about the extra penny spent on salt?
One day in the mid-1960s, Zhou Enlai, who never asked about his family's income and expenditure, suddenly asked Yang Jinming, a staff member around him, to report on his family's income and expenditure in the past two months. Yang Jinming was very nervous at the moment: Could something have gone wrong? He immediately took the notebook which recorded the income and expenditure of Zhou Enlai's family, and called Cheng Yuangong and Gao Zhenpu, who usually used money, to arrive at Zhou Enlai's place together.
When Zhou Enlai saw that they had all arrived, he got up and walked out of the office, sat down on the bench in his reception room, and indicated that Yang Jinming reported his family expenses.
Yang Jinming read with his bookkeeping notebook: Buy scallions for 5 cents on March 1 for kitchen use; On March 2, I bought a kilo of salt, 15 cents, for kitchen use.
"Stop." After Zhou Enlai stopped, he looked at Yang Jinming with puzzled eyes and said, "you spent a penny more on salt."
Yang Jinming was nervous and hurriedly put down his notebook. He quickly found the original receipt for buying salt, which clearly read: "one catty of salt, one cent and five cents".
After checking the invoice for buying salt, Zhou Enlai motioned them to go back, and then called the relevant departments in Beijing to ask why the price of salt for civilian use had to rise by a penny per jin. Zhou Enlai was relieved when it was found out that the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau had iodized edible salt in order to prevent citizens from suffering from big neck disease, which led to an increase in the price of edible salt.
The next day, Zhou Enlai said to Yang Jinming and Gao Zhenpu when he was out: "I don't care about the extra money, but because salt is a consumer product used by thousands of households, and the price cannot be increased at will." It was not until then that they knew that Zhou Enlai was asking about his family expenses to understand the social situation; and the emphasis on the price of a penny of salt also reflected Zhou Enlai's consistent care for people's lives.
