Tianjin Research Institute for Advanced Equipment, Tsinghua University, Research Center for Wheel-Rail Relationship and Maintenance (Wheel-Rail Research Center), is co-established by the group of Mr. Zhai Wanming from Southwest Jiaotong University, academician of Chinese academy of sciences, the group of Mr. Luo Jianbin from Tsinghua University, academician of Chinese academy of sciences, and CRRC Beijing Locomotive Co., Ltd. The Wheel-Rail Research Center will be the leading department or Secretary-General department for the Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance of Tianjin Rail Transit Industry, relying on its research advantage and the accumulation of scientific research achievements, with the policies support of Tianjin Government, the Wheel-Rail
Research Center will conduct the research, transformation, industrialization and product service in the relationship and maintenance field for railways and unban subways, to promote the influence of Tianjin City in rail transit field.
  
The group of Wheel-Rail Research Center respect Mr. Zhai Wanming, academician of Chinese academy of sciences, as the chief scientist of the alliance, uniting the group of Mr. Luo Jianbin from Tsinghua University, academician of Chinese academy of sciences, and CRRC Beijing Locomotive Co., Ltd. With young people will be the main constituent, the Wheel-Rail Center is devoted to build a research group at international standard in the research field of wheel-rail relationship.

The basic framework of the Wheel-Rail Research Center are as follows: 


Among which, the research group led by Mr. Zhai Wanming, Academician of Chinese Academy of Science, is affiliated to Traction Power State Key Laboratory of Southwest Jiaotong University, vehicles and lines research institute (Research Institute), which is an interdisciplinary research institute involving multiple subject areas including vehicle engineering, vehicle operation engineering, railway engineering, bridge engineering, engineering mechanics, environmental vibration and noise. The major research direction of the Research Institute is Wheel-Rail system dynamics simulation, vibration measurement evaluation, and it conducts frontier basic theory research and engineering application research. The characteristic of the Research Institute is that it considers the rolling stocks, rails, bridges, and substructures as a combined big system to carry out comprehensive research of the security and stationary for high-speed trains, heavy-load trains, maglev trains and urban rail transit vehicles, the dynamic influence of vehicle operation to infrastructure, and the related questions including environment vibration and noise, thus to guide the design and production practice. The achievements of the institute have won 1 First National Science-Technology Progress Prize, 2 Second Prize, 1 science and technology awards of the ministry of education, 2 science and technology awards of the ministry of Sichuan Province. The Research Institute was among the first to be chosen into the ministry of education innovation team, chosen into Important fields of science and technology innovation team in the year 2012, and was chosen into 2011 project of the ministry of education track traffic safety collaborative innovation team in the year 2013, approved by the institutions of higher learning discipline innovation conference base (111 plan) in the year 2015.

The vehicle wheel real-time detection and maintenance project is based Zhai-method, and aims to develop a set of on line monitoring system to detect wheel status. By using international advanced data real-time acquisition& detection technology and measurement device, it will detect non-circularity and polygons precisely of wheels during vehicle operation, alert and locate possible problems. Furthermore, we will adopt cloud computing and internet big data processing technology, to build a complete wheel database system on the foundation of theory analysis and test verification, and thus vehicle wheel problem’s generation and development process could be detected efficiently, it can also predict the impact of wheel damage to vehicle performance and achieve whole process monitoring of vehicle wheel safety.

The Wheel-Rail Research Center combines the discipline and talent advantage of Southwest Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University and CRRC Beijing Locomotive Co., Ltd, takes the lead in doing systemic research of Wheel-Rail relationship in China. By mastering the core technology, achieving the preventive maintenance of wheels, it will greatly decrease the maintenance cost, promote the safety state, and this technology will firstly be put into use in Tianjin City. Through serial systemic research of construction machinery products, and its utilization promotion firstly in Tianjin rail transit field. The Wheel-Rail Research Center will build the country leading Wheel-Rail maintenance group, devoted to the research and industrialization of Wheel-Rail relationship and maintenance, thus to greatly improves the influence of Tianjin City in rail transit field.
